Overview

The core aims of the curriculum at BBIH is to support students to become valuable members of society and to make progress with their education in a way that is specific to them.

The curriculum is designed to give students a broad and personalised approach to learning that will allow them to make good progress, both academically and personally.

Consistency is vital to the curriculum. Regardless of year group, subject or level students will all experience the same quality of education. In each lesson students’ work will be continuously monitored and checked with clear and precise feedback given about what is needed to progress to the next steps. In addition to this, students’ work will be marked and checked on a weekly basis.

Class sizes are smaller and therefore students can expect that they will receive more frequent feedback from subject specialists. At Key Stage 3 assessment descriptors are used regularly to determine the progress that students make. With these descriptors teachers can precisely identify both where and how students can improve their work so that they can continue to progress and develop their knowledge. Furthermore, as class sizes are smaller students can expect to receive more regular feedback on their work from teachers which will further contribute to the progress made in lessons.

At Key Stage 4 students will take nationally recognised qualifications at a level which is appropriate to them as individuals. With no more than about 12 students per class teachers will develop a very clear understanding about the strengths and needs of each student. Every student’s learning will be checked numerous times during each lesson and this consistent approach to assessment and feedback will help to ensure that all students can make progress at a pace which is appropriate to them.

Regardless of prior educational experience, students who attend BBIH will be supported to make academic and personal progress that will set them up to be successful in their next steps in life whether that be further education, apprenticeships or employment.
